Energy Audit

electricity- 631.848

water- 2,019.83 gallons of water per week

Car- I have not been driving at all the last couple of weeks so I jst put down 0

Rail Travel- 5.25

Bus Travel- 13.3

Natural Gas- 230

My total comes out to 2900.228 pounds of CO2 used by me per week. This seems very high and perhaps it is because it is because some of my data could not be limited to just my consumption. For example, the dryer, washer machine, and dish washer all use a tremendous amount of energy but my whole family utilizes these outlets as I do so i think some of the numbers may be skewed in the respect that the time used for each one had to be increased since not only my stuff was being washed.

The Sabbath Day

Consumption (Food)

Bowl of Cereal, Italian Sub, Not very much water at all. couple of glasses of milk, mad graham crackers

Electricity

I watched tv and went on the computer for non school related stuff and blared some music in my speakers.

Water

One shower, washed hands and flushed toilets.

Gas

I had to drop my mom off places and pick her up too. Probably like 10 miles. Other than that no gas.

Money

Spent money on an Italian Sub

Reduction

I did not go out with a bang today. I mean, I didnt eat that much but nothing really newsworthy. This last day was by no means impressive, I didnt drink very much water at all when i usually do so thats a good thing I guess.

Sustainability

My ability to sustain today will be measured by my level of discipline. Yesterday and today I didnt really care too much about changing my lifestyle and, consequently, I didnt notice any real change. There have been days when I really felt more pasisonate about cutting back and it was a little hard but nothing I couldnt weave into my everday life. This project has defintely made me more conscious about what I consume, and like they say, you can’t fix a problem if you don’t know theres a problem

Following

Shoutout to like the 5 people who followed me. I think there are a few kids who really went all out on this and a few who kinda didnt change anything but I think the vast majority (which is where I would consider myself here) made small changes day by day, nothing drastic. I think everyone realized that they cant take what they consume for granted anymore.

Day 6

Forgot to do this yesterday so here we go.

Consumption

breakfast- nutrgrain banana water

lunch- pbj sangy, nutrigrain, apple. water, kitkat

dinner- no dinner

i had some water throughout the day, overall I ate considerably less than the day before.

Took two showers, washed hands, flushed toilets, y’know

Watched tv late at night and went on the comp, not a good day in terms of electricity

Reduction

i definitely reduced the amount of food I consumed. it was probably the day I ate the least of any of the days. I beleive this makes up for yesterday

Sustainability

I wasnt even that hungry yesterday so I could probably do it again.

Following

I seem to be right on par with eveyone else in terms of how much  consume.

Day 5

I slacked today, I’ll make up for it tomorrow.

Consumption (food)

Breakfast: Nutrigrain, banana, bowl of cereal

Lunch: PBJ Sangy, Cheezits, nutrigrain, apple

Dinner: A  heftly load of delicious shepards pie

It is important to note that I had some frozen yogurt and peanut butter crackers for snacks throughout the day. Also two glasses of milk and I’d say about 3 bottles of watter. This is a typical day of eating for me. One ten minute shower as well

Electricity and Water

Used my laptop a bunch today in preparation for my presentation for this class tomorrow. I used the lights a lot but again, no tv. I went to the bathroom multiple time and i flushed and washed my hands multiple times as well. Like food, my electricty and water consumption was typical, nothing out of the ordinary

Gasoline: Train, Train, Bus

Money: Goddamn 6.25 on frozen yogurt, never again in my life…it was good though.

Reduction

I didn’t reduce a whole lot today, I kind of spent today like a normal day which I will make up for tomorrow and saturday hopefully. What I consumed was not excessive by any means, it is simply more than I have been consuming the other days of this experiment.

Sustainability

Throughout my other posts, I have said that I could sustain some of my reductions easily (reducing snacks and televison etc) And I have found that it is a little harder than I expected for me to resist food other than the 3 main meals. Today I indulged in two snacks when I wasnt even that hungry. I attribute this to a uncharacteristic lack of discipline and I will try hard to make sure that does happen for the last two days.

Following

Most people I looked at seemed to do better at reducing luxuries today than I. Oh well, theres always tomorrow.

Day 4

Consumption

Breakfast- Nutrigrain bar, I lost my banana on the way to school and it irked me.

Lunch- PBJ Sangy, Nutrigrain bar, Pretzels, Banana

Dinner- Chicken, Broccoli, Couscous, and a big ol’ glass of milk

this is all ive had so far although I think its important to note that I drank about 4 bottles of water throughout the day

In terms of electricity, I have not turned on the television but have been fairly active on the computer tonight due to numerous homework assignments. I listened to my ipod and have utilized the lights at my house.

Gasoline- I havent been the driver in a car since sunday I think. But today my friends mom gave me a ride from school to Dewey Square cuz I had to interview some hippies. I took the train and a bus back to my house. Thats it for gasoline today

Money- Nada

Reduction

This project has made me realize that I pretty much don’t watch tv over the week, maybe this week is an anomaly but I dont think it is. My diet was rather slim today but I had no urge to eat anything more, just one of those days I guess. I’m not trying to toot my own horn but I think I’m less dependent on technology than a lot of my peers. I dont feel like I reduced anything today but looking at what i consumed, it doesnt look like I consumed a whole lot. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll take this little project one step further…

Sustainability

I can definitely sustain what went down on day 4. Tomorrow I think I’m gonna test my limits and not eat anything except breakfast, lunch, dinner, and water. NO SNACKS. Granted, I didnt have any snacks today but I think it was just because I randomly wasn’t very hungry.

Following

I got to say, I’m not big on the whole following aspect of this project. I feel like I’m doing a pretty good job in reducing my luxurious intakes and I notice that some of my peers are too. But I am kind of only really concerned about me in this project. I’m glad other people are finding success as well and I understand the thinking that encourages a community but I just can’t dig it. I know what I’m trying to do and I frankly don’t really care what other people are trying to do. Plus its just a hassle to follow people, which is why I’m following like 7 people. Scurry’s videos are pretty sick though.

Day 3

Consumption

The past 2 days I have heavily cutback on my diet but today it was pretty much back to normal.

-Drank a fair amount of water, probably 5 bottles

-Breakfast: Bowl of cereal, nutrigran, banana

-Lunch: PBJ Sangy, Apple, pretzels, nutrigrain

-Dinner:Pizza/Grilled Cheese/Bowl of Cereal (It was not a formal dinner)

-Snack: ICE CREAM

I have not gone on the internet other than for this. I have not watched television. I took a shower (15 minutes-twice) washed hands, flushed toilet, open refrigerator, all that good stuff

Gasoline- None

Money- Money for pizza

Reduction

I reduced technology use heavily today. I don’t usually rely too heavily on technology, I tend to not watch tv during the week, dont play video games, but I do go on the computer a fair amount-but I didn’t today and it wasn’t bad at all, I just did other stuff instead (read, tweedled my thumbs, played hide and go seek, you know) So overall, I reduced technology rather than diet today.

Sustainabilty

I could definitely sustain cutting back on technology, its kind of a waste of time anyway and I’m more productive without it. Although I ate more freely today, it still wasnt excessive and I can keep up with it and probably even reduce it.

Following

Examining the updates of my compatriots, I noticed a similarity between many of them and myself. A lot of people seem to be reducing the amount of their first world luxuries in small increments, nothing drastic. I think this is good because its more than what we can say about the general population of America and if everyone just cut back a little on their luxuries, I think a lot of the consumption problems facing the world would be quelled.

Day 2

Consumption

Food-I heavily cut back on my food and drink intake today. I skipped breakfast (although that had nothing to do with this project) and for lunch had a nutrigrain bar, apple, pb and j sandwhich, and a banana. I had a bowl of soup and bread for dinner with two large glasses of milk. These two glasses of milk were all I hd to drink today as I normally bring a water bottle to school and drink form it but nothing today other than a few stops at the water fountain.

Water- Brushed my teeth and took a shower in the morning.

Gasoline- None, except train and bus to and from school

Money- None

Reduction

I mentioned earlier how I cutback primarily on food today, as I did yesterday. I think its easier to manage than say technology, since I often need the computer for school and stuff and just end up doing other stuff on it that is not school-related. Also, pretty much no water today which is impressive as I usually drink like 6 or 7 bottles a day.

Sustainabilty

Today and yesterday I have heavily decreased my diet, and I will probably not keep this up. However, I have eaten more fruit and vegetables these last couple of days which I could definitely keep up. The hell with processed food, lucky charms are mad good though. Didn’t spend any money today but I’m pretty sure that was just luck. So yeah, I think I can sustain a more fruit and vegetable rather than processed food diet.

Following

Well, I’m only following 3 other amigos because tumblr is just not my thing, but I think I might try to follow some more people after I post this. However I read your (Mr. Gay) posts from the last couple of days mainly as a structure guideline and noticed that ourcut backs are similar in proportion, nothing drastic but just little things that could make a difference over time. Until next time, stay classy tumblr.

7 DAY CHALLENGE-day one

Today I had no processed foods besides a bowl of cheerios in the morning. Normally i have some cheez-its or perhaps a nutrigrain bar but not today. I’ll try to continue this trend throughout the week but it was pretty hard to do so we’ll see how it goes. I haven’t watched tv and only went on the computer to check my email a few times so I got that going for me, although I am going to watch the patriots game later…

Overall, a pretty successful first day of waning of my first-world luxuries.
